Christmas in Germany!

It has been a crazy last few weeks. I’ve been running around gathering things for a trip to Germany for this winter’s break. I wasn’t sure I would be able to go at first, but then I was scrambling to get a passport and room and board paid for.

I get to take my finals early since we will be leaving before school is out. I only have two finals this semester, one for Psychology and the other Computer Science. Programming has been so easy for me, I know I’m going to have an A in that class, no problem. I just finished up my last assignment.

There were two parts to my final assignment for Computer Science. We had to write a program that utilized arrays and loops. The first was an example for sales in a business, and the second was a lottery program that generates 5 numbers and asks the player for 5, then counts how many matches there were.

I’m not sure how I feel about this upcoming Monday, I will be on a flight and leaving the country. I haven’t been on a plane in awhile, I’m not so much worried about that, but I’m not looking forward to spending 7+ hours in a cramped plane.

Die Deutsche Gesellschaft: Picking up the Pieces

Die Deutsche Gesellschaft (DDG) has pulled itself together. Last year, DDG was quiet, we didn’t do all that much, other than watch movies. This year, I am President, and the members are more active, so we are building it up. We got a copy of the Constitution of DDG from the Student Organization office, and brought it to the last meeting. We’re amending it to include new Officer positions. Dues were brought up, last meeting, I was surprised everyone was more than willing to pay $20, even. Soon, we will open a bank account so we can begin fundraising, it is very exciting.

SLENDERMAN!

An indie horror game, known as Slender, has become quite popular recently. I’ve watched a few videos on YouTube of people playing it, but I have never played it myself. I’ve heard a few mentions of pranks people have played on their friends.

A related video popped up on YouTube, a fan made documentary. Nicely made, I might add. It played more on the lore or Slenderman. So, I decided to look up a little.

Surprisingly, though probably not so surprising, is it is linked with several cultures, like any other mythological story. The strongest connection I saw, was with Germany. A 16th century folklore mentions Der Grossmann (The Tall Man), and has locations similar to those portrayed such as Schwarzwald (Black Forest).

What I’m most excited about this is I have to write a five-sentence short story for my German class tomorrow. I believe I’ve found my subject.

Code::Blocks IDE

I have wanted to learn C++ for some time now. When I was younger I had used GameMaker, at the time it was version 4.2, and it had it’s own language modeled after C++. After searching around tutorials to write programs I’d tried several IDEs, or attempted to anyway. Many of them I had issues with installing it, or compiling, linker errors, and it was such a pain. Finally after finding Code::Blocks with the built in compiler, I had no issues. I was able to write programs they way people said to on tutorials.

You can downloaded Code::Blocks with the MinGW compiler built in from here.

Now, I’m taking Computer Science 1 at University, and the focus of the class is C++. Now that I have an IDE all ready installed, I don’t have to deal with the rush of trying to get my system up and running for class.
